How to Travel in Style on a Mid-Range Budget

You don’t have to choose between backpacking on a shoestring and remortgaging your house. That perfect middle ground between budget and luxury? It absolutely exists. After more than 40 years in the travel industry, we’ve learned that luxury isn’t about how much you spend – it’s about where and how you spend it.

When you travel matters more than anything else. Head out during shoulder season (those lovely windows just before or after peak times) and you’ll discover the same five-star hotels, the same stunning destinations, the same incredible experiences – for far less.

Take the Greek islands. Visit in May or October instead of July or August, and you could save up to 40% on accommodation. The weather’s still wonderful, the beaches are still gorgeous, and the sea is perfect for swimming. Best of all, you’ll meet actual locals running the tavernas instead of temporary seasonal staff.

This works everywhere. The Italian Lakes in September glow with autumn light and harvest-time food. The Caribbean in May offers pristine beaches before hurricane season and after the winter price spike. Even Paris or Barcelona can cost half as much if you skip school holidays and major events.

You can’t do everything first-class on a mid-range budget, but you can choose what matters most to you.

Maybe you fly economy but treat yourself to a suite at your destination. Or you stay in a comfortable three-star hotel but go all-out on that once-in-a-lifetime dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant. You could use public transport for most of your city break but hire a private guide for one day to truly understand the place.

Here’s something we love recommending: book a day pass at a luxury hotel. You don’t need to stay the night to enjoy the spa, pool, or beachfront. Many high-end resorts sell day passes for a fraction of their nightly rate. You get all the pampering, then head back to your comfortable hotel nearby.

Small boutique hotels and family-run properties often give you more character, personal service, and genuine memories than corporate chains – and they usually cost less too.

These special places tend to include extras that bigger hotels charge for: welcome drinks, home-baked treats, insider tips from owners who actually care about your holiday. You might find yourself in a converted palazzo in Italy, a traditional riad in Morocco, or a historic coaching inn in the Cotswolds – places with real stories and hosts who become part of your trip.

The same applies to dining. Skip the hotel restaurant (unless it’s something special) and ask locals where they eat. You’ll find neighbourhood trattorias in Rome serving pasta that would cost three times more in tourist areas, or family-run curry houses in Kerala where the warmth of welcome beats any Michelin star.

This is where booking with experienced travel agents really helps.

Package holidays sometimes get a bad rap, but they’re often the smartest way to save. Tour operators negotiate flights, hotels, and transfers at rates you simply can’t get on your own. Even with their margin, you often pay less than booking separately – plus you get financial protection, 24-hour support, and someone to fix problems if they arise.

We’ve seen so many people spend hours online, only to find their “bargain” flights land at midnight, their “cheap” hotel is 90 minutes from everything they want to see, and the transfer they forgot to book costs more than the flight itself.

Our agents have been there. We know the properties, understand the logistics, and can tell you which upgrades are worth it and which are just marketing fluff. That knowledge is priceless.

Some destinations naturally give you more luxury for less.

Portugal is fantastic value. Boutique hotels in Lisbon’s Alfama district, incredible seafood dinners with wine for less than a pizza back home, port tastings in centuries-old Porto cellars – it all feels wonderfully indulgent.

Vietnam and much of Southeast Asia offer five-star experiences at three-star prices. Private cooking classes, tailored silk suits, traditional spa treatments, boutique hotels in French colonial buildings – all affordable for most travellers.

Croatia gives you Mediterranean beauty without Mediterranean prices. Dubrovnik can be pricey (and crowded), but Split or the islands of Hvar and Korčula offer crystal-clear waters, excellent wine, fresh seafood, and charming hotels that won’t empty your wallet.

Luxury doesn’t always mean five-star hotels and champagne (though we’re not complaining about either). Sometimes the most luxurious things are time, space, and freedom.

Renting a villa in Tuscany or a cottage in Provence might cost the same as a mid-range hotel, but you get a whole property, a private pool, and the joy of living like a local. You can shop at morning markets, cook with regional ingredients, and watch the sunset from your own terrace with a glass of local wine.

Or consider “alternative ports” for cruises. Instead of flying to Barcelona and dealing with the crowds, sail from Southampton. You get the luxury of unpacking once while visiting multiple places, and save hundreds on flights and transfers.

Proper travel insurance and financial protection might seem like an extra expense when you’re budgeting, but it’s the difference between a minor hiccup and a financial nightmare.

All our holidays are ABTA protected, so your money is safe if anything happens to your travel company. Personal travel insurance covers medical emergencies, cancellations, lost luggage, and more. It’s the peace of mind that lets you actually relax rather than worrying about “what if.”

After four decades of planning holidays, we’ve learned the true secret: affordable luxury isn’t about tricks or hacks. It’s about knowing what you actually value.

Some people need that five-star hotel. Others are happy in a comfortable three-star and would rather spend the difference on experiences. Some want to fly business class. Others would trade that for three extra days at their destination.

There’s no single right answer. The real luxury is having the holiday that’s right for you, planned by someone who listens and knows how to make it happen within your budget.

That’s where we come in. Pop into your local branch and let’s talk about what luxury means to you, and how we can deliver it without the luxury price tag. With decades of experience across 12 branches, we’ve probably arranged exactly the trip you’re dreaming of – many times over.

The world is waiting. And it’s more affordable than you think.
